The Moon

Bill had always been the simplest of men. He never wanted for anything, never desired of anything. He possessed very little and sought less. He earned only what he needed to buy his necessities and to insure he had a place to live. As he grew older he came to live in a small hut at the base of a large mountain. Each day, he left his hut and he climbed the cliffs and sat and waited for the moon to rise, marveling at the beauty of it.

One evening, while he was atop the mountain, a man came to his hut and broke in, thinking to steal whatever he could find of value. Searching throughout the small hut, the thief was unable to find a single thing to take. While he searched, Bill returned and found him. Instead of being angry, Bill welcomed him to his home and told him not to leave empty handed, but to take his clothes as a gift. The thief was puzzled, but took the clothing and fled. Bill sat outside his hut, watching the thief run away, thinking, if only I could have given him the moon.
