Goals

The small perch swims upstream, against the strong current, weaving in and out, dodging objects coming downstream, other fish, branches, trash, debris, whatnot. Ever slower, he moves around obstacles, making his way pass rocks and trees caught in the stream. He is desperate to reach his goal, a goal he no longer even can bring to mind, yet he moves on, never thinking to reverse course. The swim becomes more and more difficult as he tires, the objects he must swim around become more numerous, and yet he swims on. His life is set before him, he has made a determination, he has decided on a course, and he has not chosen to surrender. No sadness, no anger, no remorse, he continues on with resolve, moving, just moving. The goal no longer matter, the path does.
