The Meaning of Life

"What is the meaning of life?" Every time the young student came to his teacher, he asked the same question. "What is the meaning of life?" One day, as they were parting, the teacher whispered to the young student, "One day, when we are alone, I will give you the answer."

Excited, the youth applied himself more strongly to his lessons. Each day he waited, but the two of them never were alone together. Many months passed and the youth grew and became a very fine student, one of the best of the teacher's. Still he wanted his question answered and he continuously reminded the teacher he had not forgotten his inquiry.

Finally, one summer day, as the two of them walked along a path, they found themselves alone. The student turned to his teacher and again asked , "What is the meaning of life?"

The teacher stopped, sighed, smiled, pointing to some nearby growth, "These trees are tall, just as they are. Those trees are short, just as they are." He then continued his walk.
